All the things learned in 2012!
I plan, in the coming weeks, to post all the things I've learned in the last year of teachingThere's quite a bit, some good and some not so much (the "not so much" refers to the fact that adults are very scared right now and not trying new things in general.)
What I will say "right out of the gate" is that adult students too often do not believe that it is even possible for them to learn much of anything. Since this is where the money is (kids must get money from parents as they don't earn any!) this represents a huge bunch of potential learners.
Also, why do I say keyboard/piano? Simple! Per the American Heritage Dictionary a "keyboard" is a board with keys on it designed to make music. This would include ALL forms of musical instrument which utilize keys: acoustic pianos, digital pianos, portable keyboards, organs, synthsizers, etc. Still, the general public has bought into the idea that acoustic pianos are somehow better, more "real" (whatever that means!) that anything that plugs into the wall.
I say this is very wrong-headed and in the coming weeks I'll explain why! And since it's much easier to convince adults to purchase keyboards my advice will help them a good bit.
