Harsh but True Words YOU Need to Hear!
Now there is no shortage of "teachers" online who make promises that no one could keep. Unfortunately, this tough, rough economy has driven many folks to try their wares, thinking that another mouse click, another video might just teach them to play (and thus ensure for them all the benefits to be gained by making your own music.)
This would all be true, except for one horrible fact - it is NOT the mind that plays an instrument but the hands. And the hands are not the mind, in fact, the hands of anyone are a ton dumber than the mind of that person. How do I know? What does this mean for you? Gather to yourself some further patience, as I will answer both these questions in the next two paragraphs!
Why do I believe this? I have had many individuals sit in front on my instrument: doctors, lawyers, CPAs, engineers, scientists, business owners, PhD's - those folks that are thought to be the brightest amongst us. They uniformly were smart, some much smarter than I am (and I'm a really smart guy, at according to my instructors at the University of Arizona and my High School.) However, none could master the instrument even when they understood perfectly what to do. Most all wondered at this, having succeeded wildly in their lives, and way too many were very hard on themselves. It was because their hands were "dumb as a post." I started telling them this. They were greatly reassured.
What does this mean for you? Stop trying to learn solely online. Yeah, it's free - but it's also not worth all that much. Do you seek real skill and ability or just something cheap? I believe that if you want some real skill you'll have to pay for it, either with a real teacher (if you are a complete beginner) or online (if you already know how to play a bit.) Besides, decent instructors deserve to survive as well, don't they? There are also ways to decrease the cost of an instrument but that is NOT the subject of this post.
