What I Mean by "Real" Help for Music Students

Here I am teaching a student who wants to have a hobby!
As opposed, in this case, to "Fake" help (there a lot of that out there)

I mean what a person really needs to learn in order to do what they would like to do. Notice what I did NOT say! I did not say "What I, The Expert, WANT you to do." That's cause YOU know that already. You are The Expert on you. Based on years of teaching and asking folks about this most people just want to have a nice hobby of making their favorite music. Your desires might or might not be different.

My expertise lies in teaching you what you need to know to accomplish your musical goals. (This is true even if the student is a child. In that case, those raising that child, paying for the lessons, etc. have goals.) I'm damn good at it.  Our first meeting is where I find out what your goals are and I then provide a means to accomplish them. I offer you a tailored program. It's a pretty easy strategy - find out what the person wants and then make it possible for them to enjoy getting it.

To me, at least, that is "real" help. Now there is no shortage of folks jumping on the band wagon and offering stuff online which supposedly can "teach you to play." The only trouble with these videos, these DVD courses, these Skype sessions is that I don't think they actually work all that well. There are many reasons for this, reasons I will go into in future posts. The next one will be next week on Sunday.

Now I haven't, of course, tried every one of the numerous online only items but I did do two solid years of research into this. I've also taught folk of all ages since 1987 (always the way I stated above.). However, if you have learned everything you need to know from some online source and would like to "spread the word" then comment below.

I believe that only those with some ability to already play can benefit successfully from online work. For these people I offer some help. It's been my experience that those who can (and will) read, who can follow directions, and who are NOT hell bent on getting there now, Now, NOW, can benefit greatly from my help.
