Learning Music is Much More about Lessons Than "Talent"

90% PERSPIRATION, 10% INSPIRATION is the figure I've heard

Now maybe this is your "reason" for not taking lessons ("I'm not very talented!) If so, and you are at all open to some other views than read on. If it is NOT your reason (or you are NOT open) then you can quit now.

I always loved music. I'm pretty good at it. I have friends who are as well. Many are professional musicians. All those who claim the label "professional." are usually a bit more talented than the average person. However, even the best admit (when they are being honest) that they could never have done it without "hard work." This hard work is sometimes called "paying your dues." (Hey, if there is a name for it then this is not an unknown concept that I, personally, invented!)

Yet I keep hearing folks poo-poo lessons for themselves by saying, "I'm not musical" or "I'm not artistic." Folks, I'm not talking about becoming a professional. I'm talking about playing simple, favorite music at the hobbyist level. That ain't hard work at all. Buy a cheap keyboard at the local store or off craigslist and spend some time and money learning to play it. Simple, right? Doesn't matter if you think you aren't artistic - you'll likely succeed.

Now piano is NOT an easy instrument to get a handle on so if you are thinking of that as the only thing worth doing, think again. You can read the other posts in this blog to find out why. Or you can email me, Dan Starr, with your concerns at danstarrorg@yahoo.com. Hey, that is something easy to do and not all that scary.

Music can make you happier cheaply. Isn't that worth an email at least?
