...IF you want you kids to benefit from music lessons
Want Your Child to Benefit from Music Lessons?
Of course, not all parents do. Some are only "keeping up with the Joneses." I got a call from a mom once who told me (with a straight face,) "My 2 /12 year old wants piano lessons!" I doubted this but instead of telling her something negative I told her how she could help her child without resorting to paying an expert. Hopefully she did what I told her.
Recently, a friend (who phoned me just after she had given birth!) asked me when to start her kid in formal lessons. I told her the same thing I told the mom above. I saw this mother over the weekend and her child (who is now 11) has been taking lessons for many years. Success!
Here's the info for parents who care - your child's first teacher must be your child's BEST teacher. Just because someone is convenient or cheap doesn't actually matter to your child. It might matter to you. A few years ago I ceased to accept kids - mostly cause of problems with their parents, not because they are kids. (Hey - I'm a musician and can "play" with the best children. I love to do it.) However, parents, especially over-achievers, sometimes live through their children and force them to do too much - karate on Monday, ballet on Tuesday, music on Wednesday, and so on. The poor kid is run ragged, as are his parents (usually the mother!)
What I recommend is enroll your child in something that they will have the rest of their lives. That would be music, it seems to me, and there are a huge number of reasons that music is best taught via electronic keyboard.
